About
Vera van Almen is a Dutch artist born in 1986. based in
’s-Hertogenbosch, in the south of the Netherlands. She graduated at the Photo Academy in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in 2017. While studying photography, she started experimenting more and more with photography, pushing the boundaries of the medium. Her digital camera was soon exchanged for an analogue camera, supplemented by an old-fashioned Polaroid camera. This became her favourite. She discovered the charm of allowing chance and the imperfections that come with it. The urge to experiment remained and soon she started trying out different printing techniques in the darkroom, which proved to be a pivotal moment in her artistic journey. Having to act physically to achieve images became a necessity in her process. She has since abandoned the camera entirely and now creates her images camera-less.

Artist statement
My artworks feel like enigmas of absence, a quest for the intangible, a journey to states of being that, no matter how hard I try, I cannot rationally grasp. My pursuit of representing absence is infused with a deep sense of contemplation and stillness. In a world where perfection is often considered the norm, I embrace imperfections and mistakes in my work as an integral part of my artistic process.

My work transcends the literal representation of reality. I challenge you to look at what is not there, to experience emptiness, and to understand that beauty resides in the unknown. My creations reflect my longing for something I do not know and may never fully comprehend. It's like catching a glimpse of something greater, a yearning for spiritual depth.
In a time when the world often revolves around perfection and clear-cut answers, I want to remind you that beauty can be found in imperfection, in the pursuit of the unknown, and in the silence of the unanswered. My art is an invitation for you to explore and embrace the boundaries of the comprehensible, realizing that some questions may never be fully answered. I invite you not only to view my work but also to experience it, to embrace its meditative impact.

Longing
for a place
you have never been

Longing
for a time
you do not know

Coming home
to a place
you have never been

Feeling akin
to somenone
you do not know

Losing
an other me

Feeling nothing
is that feeling something?

I did not know
that nothing
can be everything
